Introduction
The Zinnia elegans ‘California Giant Mix’ is a classic heirloom variety celebrated for its tall growth and large, showy double flowers in a dazzling mix of bright colors — including red, pink, yellow, orange, purple, and white. Growing up to 3–4 feet tall, these zinnias make a bold statement in garden beds and borders while attracting butterflies and pollinators. Perfect for cut flower arrangements, they bring long-lasting color and beauty from midsummer through frost with minimal care.
Seed Sowing Instructions
Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost when soil has warmed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-drained soil and keep at 70–75°F. Germination typically occurs within 7–10 days. Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart to allow room for full growth. California Giant zinnias grow quickly and begin blooming about 8 weeks after sowing.
Plant Care Instructions
Zinnias thrive in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly but avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of powdery mildew. Remove spent blooms (deadhead) to encourage continuous flowering and stronger growth. These heat-loving annuals perform exceptionally well in warm climates and make excellent cut flowers thanks to their sturdy stems and large, long-lasting blooms. Ideal for flower beds, borders, and summer garden displays.
