Planting and Harvesting Tips:
Plant in spring or late summer, but be aware that taste improves with frost.
Spring planting: Start indoors two months before last frost. Four weeks after sowing (plants should be 4-5 in. tall), plant outdoors approx. 12 in. apart.
Summer/fall planting: Direct sow 90 days before the first frost; thin seedlings to 12 in. apart.
Keep plants well watered to prevent bitterness, but keep water on the soil, not the leaves, to prevent rot. To blanch, tie up outer leaves with rubber bands or twine during the last 2-3 weeks of growth. Make sure leaves are dry before blanching to prevent rot.
