Pycnanthemum, the mountain mints, is a remarkable genus endemic to North America, comprising beautiful, well-behaved perennials with aromatic foliage and dense flower clusters beloved by native pollinators.
The genus name, Pycnanthemum, comes from the Latin 'pycno' (dense) and 'anthemum' (flower), referring to their characteristically dense flower clusters that provide abundant nectar for bees and other pollinators.
Slender Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium) embodies elegant simplicity with its fine, almost grass-like foliage and delicate clusters of small white flowers. This refined native mint relative brings distinctive texture to gardens while delivering the aromatic appeal and pollinator magnetism its genus is famous for.
Growing 2-3 feet tall, its narrow leaves create an airy, fine-textured presence topped with loose clusters of white flowers from midsummer into fall. The sweet, clean fragrance carries subtle citrus notes distinct from other mountain mints. Native bees and butterflies visit consistently throughout the extended blooming period, drawn by the abundant nectar in its small but numerous flowers.

Prefers full sun but tolerates light shade. Exceptionally drought-tolerant once established. Space plants 18-24 inches apart. Forms tidy clumps that stay where placed, making it perfect for both formal and naturalistic gardens.
**For best results,** plant in drifts where its fine texture can contrast with broader-leaved perennials. Excellent in rain gardens, meadow plantings, or herb gardens where its refined aromatic foliage and sustained pollinator activity can be appreciated. Leaves make a delicate tea and can season dishes where a subtle mint flavor is desired.
**~ Germination Instructions ~**
Native mountain mints are easy to germinate and grow, with no pretreatment needed. Surface sow seeds in fall or early spring, barely covering as they need light to germinate. Keep consistently moist until germination occurs in 2-3 weeks.
